DevOps Cram Sheet

July 02, 2019 by Nathaniel Avery in DevOps

The DevOps movement is still very much alive and finding its way from the commercial world into the Government. Government adoption, like in other places tend to find themselves on a spectrum between setting up and managing a CI/CD pipeline to full on broken down silos and self-managing teams. It’s because of this range of experiences that I decided to compile a quick cheat sheet that help folks cram on the subject if they find that their traditional silo is being disrupted by a DevOps initiative.

The good news is that DevOps has been around for a while, meaning there are plenty of resources to get a person up to speed. This list isn’t meant to be all inclusive. It’s a curated effort based on media I’ve consumed over time.

Books

Videos

If there’s one video to start with it’s this one - "10+ Deploys Per Day: Dev and Ops Cooperation at Flickr" from the Velocity 09 conference. The talk is given by John Allspaw and Paul Hammond. It really sums up what people are trying to accomplish via DevOps. A lot of the language we have now wasn’t available then, same as the tools. But this is for me, where it began.

The next two videos are modern takes on how mature enterprises view and implement DevOps

  • Bank on Open Source for DevOps Success - Capital One - https://youtu.be/CTDx627FRVg

  • How Netflix Thinks of DevOps - https://youtu.be/UTKIT6STSVM

These next Videos are from the Government sector and are helpful for anyone in that sector as some of the challenges can be similar to the commercial world, but also unique to that sector.

  • How we covertly nudged government web managers to practice DevOps - Will Slack - https://youtu.be/m3U4vmVMjLU

  • DOES15 - Aaron Volkmann - Busting Silos & Red Tape: DevOps in Federal Government - https://youtu.be/eN8x18mJztw

  • Overview of Open Source DevOps in Azure Government - https://youtu.be/uXd8DkDpF50

Podcasts

While some of the podcasts have Azure in the title, a lot of the material is portable.
